024 — Act 2 Sc 3 Act 3 Sc 1

Warm Up

Do you think the deaths of Romeo and Juliet were avoidable? Who is responsible for what happened? Is it fate? Romeo? The Friar? Tybalt? The fued? Explain your answer in a good sized paragraph.

Example answer

The death of Romeo and Juliet could have been avoided, but it is hard to pin point a single cause of the tragedy. Clearly fate had a lot to do with it: we are told in the prologue of the ‘star-crossed’ lovers, and there a numerous chance encounters that lead the young lovers to their fatal end. It is also clear that a number of bad decisions by certain characters contribute to what happens: Romeo and Juliet act rashly by getting married so quickly and deciding to kill themselves on a whim; the Friar is also responsible for agreeing to marry the young lovers instead of approaching their families to explain the situation, and the fued itself is a big factor in what happens because that is the reason why Romeo and Juliet hide their relationship from their parents.
