Warm Up
Get yourselves into groups of 4 – you must team up with people you haven’t worked with this term. Arrange the tables so you can have effective group discussion.
Task
In your groups:
- Discuss the theme you have been assigned
- Create a mind map of all the ways this theme is explored in the novel
- Agree on Michael Morpurgo’s theisis statement: what is the message he is trying to communicate about this theme?
- What moment in the novel demonstrates his theisis statement better than any other?
- Find one quote from the text that encapsulates this moment
Pair up with some one from another table that is not directly next to yours; make eye contact and raise a hand to establish who your partner is. Once you have a partner:
- Stay in you seat.
- NO TALKING ALOUD – TEST CONDITIONS PLEASE.
- Connect through some kind of chat/messenger app
- Discuss the theme you each explored, share your theisis statement, moment of significance and quote
- Decide on how they relate to each other and create a new theisis statement that shows the author’s view of how they are related: remember, all themes work together, none work in isolation.
