TEEL V TEEEL

Today we are going to look at layering evidence in our main body paragraphs. The aim with layering evidence is to make your paragraphs richer and more detailed.

In the past we have focused on TEEL (Topic Evidence Explanation Link), when you layer and extra piece of evidence into you paragraphs the structure looks more like TEEEL (Topic Evidence Explanation Evidence Link).

In reality, you can have three of four bits of evidence in a pragraph, but you have to make sure that you don’t over do it and end up running out of time to complete your essay in the exam.

Example

PK learns many lessons, growing up in South Africa, from the people he meets. Discuss

TEEL

PK develops a deep understanding of the importance of using his head to solve problems. His mentor Geil Pete tells him to think ‘first with the head, then with the heart’ when trying to explain how being small isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Geil Pete illustrates this to PK when he calmy swaps his bucket of tobacco for an empty one just before being asked to empty it by Sgt. Boorman. Geil Pete was in a very tricky situation and may well have been caught with the tobacco, if he hadn’t held his nerve and thought his way out of the situation.  PK learns about the value of using his head from the wise people he encounters; it is this which allows him to develop into such a wise young man himself.

Geil Pete was in a very tricky situation and may well have been caught with the tobacco, if he hadn’t held his nerve and thought his way out of the situation. This ability to recognise when stealth is the best approach against brute force comes out in PK himself when caught talking to Gideon Dima; PK understands the best way to avoid trouble with the police is to treat Gideon with the disrespect the police do, thus making them believe he is as racist as they are. PK learns about the value of using his head from the wise people he encounters; it is this which allows him to develop into such a wise young man himself.

‘Discuss’ Essay Questions, Quotes, Planning

Warm Up

‘Discuss’ Essay Questions

Discuss essay questions require you to write as though a particular statment is true. You are not being asked to decided whether you agree or disagree with an idea; instead, you are being asked to explain how a given idea is correct. Look at the question below. Let’s write a lotus diagram for it.

PK learns many lessons, growing up in South Africa, from the people he meets. Discuss

Now you have seen  how to plan for a discuss question, I would like you to have a go at writing a plan for the following:

PK’s childhood prepared him for his role as the Rainmaker. Discuss

Quotes

Once you have completed your lotus diagram, I want you to work  in pairs to fill in a quotes table. You will be allowed to bring this into the exam, so please fill in it as much as you can.

TPOO Essay

I have just found out that you are expected to do an essay on TPOO; I gave you incorrect information in this regard – I do apologise.

Not to worry. We have been doing some great work on the text, and we have done a lot of work around writing Text Responses already.

Today, I would like you to go over the notes we made when writing our Romeo and Juliet essays; I would like you to use these notes to create:

  • a Lotus Diagram for the following question: The Power of One presents the idea that all violence is bad. Do you agree?
  • Write an introduction, main body paragraph and conclusion based on the plan you have created.
  • If you finish early, go over your speeches which will be due next lesson.

Persuasive Techniques

Spot the Technique Game

  • Get into groups of three.
  • Script a 2 mins sketch in which a real estate agent is to sell a house to  a couple who wish to buy their first home.
  • Each person in the group must use a different persuasive technique during the course of the conversation.
  • You must write the definition of 6 persuasive techniques, 3 of which must be used in your sketch, on the board before you begin.
  • You must make the 3 persuasive techniques such a natural part of the dialogue, that it will be very difficult for the audience to spot them.
  • You will get a 1 point for every technique that the audience doesn’t guess correctly.
  • The group with the most points wins.
