003 — Warm Up, View and Analysis Short Films

Warm Up

Short films are very different to full length features. Based on the ones you have seen, write a paragraph to explain the made differences between the two.

Learning Objectives

  • Establish understanding of short films as a unique a distinct art form
  • Explore ways in which movement of characters between locations is shown in film

Task 1

I gave a number of the groups the same feedback on their in camera production task: don’t show every step of a character moving from one location to the next. You can show a character moving from C2 to P15 in a more engaing way with 3 shots than you can with 10. Remember: the audience understands that movement has occured, even if it isn’t shown on screen. With this is mind I would like you to view the film below and document the movement of 3 characters. Make a note what is shown and what is left out.

Task 2

View 3 more films from Tropfest and see if you can identify the key features of the short film format. One common feature is a twist or punchline that occurs at the end of the film to bring the narrative together. What other things are commonly seen in short films?

  1. What is being depicted in the advertisement?  Describe ad
  2. Make notes on two or three code communicates
  3. Explain who you think the target audience is and why
  4. Note any stereotypes that are present
  5. Write a paragraph explaining what you have found, making sure you link it to the message of the ad/brand

The image is of a tradie fixing a washing machine in someone’s kitchen and dog with its ur and ears flapping in the wind generated by a powerful fart that has been done by the tradie. (The tradie is crouched down with he head stuck under a bench.) The the flapping of the small dog’s ears is a humours depiction of a powerful gust of wind, which seems to be the result of indigestion. The product is placed in the bottom right corner of the frame with text encircled by a cloud/wind shaped bubble. This reinforces the problem of wind caused by indigestion and makes it clear to the audience that Mylanta is a product that can prevent such wind. The positioning of a wrench and a glue gun are important in establishing the representation of the tradie, as are the boots and shorts the model is wearing. Tradies maybe the target audience for the product as well, given the fact they are known for having a bad diet.

008 — Introduction to Advertising

Today we are going to look at print ads and how to analyse them

The steps are the same each time you analyse an ad. We will go through them together today, but in the exam you will be expected to remember and follow them yourself.

EXAMPLES

This ad depicts an edgy-looking guy sporting a mohawke; he is wearing an orange t-shirt in an off-beat record shop. The text claims that the gentleman is a PC and that ‘Windows 7 was [his] idea;’ this personifies the PC, suggesting the PC is more about the person using it than the object itself. The unposed body language, matter-of-fact gaze and casual dress of the man implies he could be anyone and that the text actually refers to all PC users. This suggests Windows 7 is Microsofts response to consumer demand, making the company seem hip and responsive. The fact that a computer is not shown anywhere in the ad reinforces that the brand Windows 7 is focused more on the people that use it than the machine it will be used on.

In this ad a young boy stands holding a soccer ball, wearing a white shirt covered in mud. The text says that ‘dirt is good’ implying that dirt is something this company likes. This promotes the idea that OMO is not scared of dirt and therefore has confidence in the quality of their product. The playful look of the boy holding the ball is meant to show that getting dirty is something that comes naturally to young boys and that it is something they enjoy. This suggests an air of inevitability about having to remove stains from clothes. Mothers looking at this ad will be intrigued by the claim ‘dirt is good’ because for many of them dirt is something that they dread seeing on clothes. OMO is positioning itself to be able to relieve some of their anxiety by presenting themselves as a brand that relishes any ‘dirt’ challenge.

007 — Four Part Structure of Film & Begin Preproduction

Today we are going to learn about the structure of film. This will involve looking at the order that the narrative unfolds and identifying things that push the narrative along. This is necessary for you to be able to begin drafting your own screenplay as part of the pre-production stage of your film project.

In film there are traditionally four main parts:

  1. ORIENTATION – The point at which we join film. This is usually during a relatively calm moment in the narrative where we get to learn what is ‘normal’ in the world of the film.
  1. CRISIS – The point at which something happens to the main character that forces them to act. This is often a negative event, in the eyes of the main character, and is the cause of all the subsequent action in the film – e.g. someone gets kidnapped.
  1. CLIMAX – The most intense moment of the film. This can be positive or negative e.g. the hero disarms the bomb or the old man finally dies.
  1. RESOLUTION – This is when all the loose ends of the film are tied up. This will involve letting the audience know what happens to the rest of the characters in the narrative. One way to understand this is to ask the question ‘where do they go from here?’

Now, I would like you to watch the two films posted below and see if you can identify the four parts structure in them. Write your answer in you book.

Now, I want you to find two more short films that are listed as Tropfest Finalist and see if the four art structure is apparent in them too. Note the title of the film and it’s year of release as past of the notes you take.

When you have done that, I would like you to begin your preproduction. As you should know, preproduction is the planning stage of your film. I told you last lesson that you must create and 3 min film that includes a wink and a dice. Taking what you have learned about the four part structure of film narrative I want you to think of some ideas that include a wink and a dice. Complete the taks below to help you begin generating ideas:

  1. List ten different of places/scenarios where a wink and a dice are likely to be seen.
  2. Get into pairs and get your partner to randomly choose two places/scenarios from you list.
  3. Come up with a film that contains the four part structure and for each place/scenario chosen by you partner.

006 — Screen Production Task, Introduce Concept of Writing About Film

Warm Up

What kind of person is Cinna? How do you know this? Write a paragraph explaining your answer; try and explain how costume and acting help establish his character.

Today

There are a number of things involved with writing about film:

  1. Watch film
  2. Note the production techniques that are most obvious (eg. camera, acting, lighting, editing or sound)
  3. Identify the purpose each production technique
  4. Analyse, making sure to move back and forth between describing the production technique and the purpose for its use
    1. Set the scene (What is going on at this point in the film?)
    2. Describe the use two or three production techniques and explain their purpose

Let’s watching the following clip of The Reaping.

Production Techniques and Their Purpose

  • Props
    • Effie Trinket high heels, make up and nails — disconnected from reality
  • Sound
    • lots of silence — increase tension
    • music when Peeta called — highlight link/beginning of journey
  • Editing
    • Flashback — history between Katnis and Peeta, fated connection
  • Acting
    • Silent Salute — divide between The Capitol and District 12

Analysis

Effie Trinket conducts The Reaping on stage in front of the District 12 residents, who look on somberly in their dull clothing as the brightly dressed, chirpy voiced Effie prattles on. Her clothing, make up and nails are extravagent, out of place and a bit absurd given the occasion. Effie’s appearence and patronising positivity highlight the difference in status between the citizens of The Capitol and those of District 12. This divide is further relfected by the silent salute the audience give Katnis. Effie tries to get the audience to applaud District 12’s ‘first volunteer’ but she is the only one who claps. The silent rasing a hands by the crowd is a defiant gesture; it shows solidarity and respect for Katniss, while being done in disregard of the request Effie made to applaud.
