PROMPT: Conflict is difficult to bear, some manage better than others.

005 – Introduction to class blog

Today we are going to look at the class blog I have created and I am going to give you your login details.

You will be expected to make a range of posts on your blog during the course of the year; today is just about getting familiar with the concept of bloging, making sure that your password works and taking the opportunity to make your first post, which is going to be a list of words that best describe you.

008 – Grammar recap & first short story collection

Today, we will begin by collecting in your short stories.

Now, we will recap the answers to some of the grammar question that you have done since the start of term and look ahead to the progress check that you will have to do soon.

009 – Statement of Explanation

Today we are going to focus on how to write a Statement of Explanation; however, before we do that let’s recap what you did last class.

You were asked to read an example of an imaginative piece written by a student last year. You were also asked to answer the following questions:

  • Question: How does it read as a letter? Does the format remain consistent throughout or does it change? If so, what form do you think it changes to?
  • Answer: It is laid out like a letter but there is a huge cap between the second and third paragraph that makes it sound more like a diary entry. Unless this is meant to be a letter that is written during random moments of down time, which would have to be explained in the SOE, this doesn’t make sense.
  • Question: How would you rate this piece, in terms of effective description of setting? Low, medium or high? Why? Can you quote a line from the piece to justify your opinion?
  • Answer: It is medium in terms of it’s description of setting. It outlines the gruesome nature of war, but lacks specific details about trenches and the sounds and smells the writer experienced.
  • Question: What is the underlying message of the piece? What statement is it making about conflict? Explain your answer.
  • Answer: This piece seems to be focused on the complex nature of war and the naivety of some that signed up to fight for Australia at Gallipoli.
Now we are going to take a look at a PowerPoint that explains how to write a Statement of Explanation.

008 – Examining an exam of student work

For today’s class, I would like you to look at an example of an imaginative piece written by a student last year. It is on the extranet under: UNIT 1 & 2 > CONTEXT- CONFLICT > IMAGINATIVE STUDENT SAMPLE AND EXPLANATORY. It has been typed up and saved as a PDF document.

Read through it and answer the following questions as best you can:

  • How does it read as a letter? Does the format remain consistent throughout or does it change? If so, what form do you think it changes to?
  • How would you rate this piece, in terms of effective description of setting? Low, medium or high? Why? Can you quote a line from the piece to justify your opinion?
  • What is the underlying message of the piece? What statement is it making about conflict? Explain your answer.

004 – Continue designing and constructing Zoetrope

Today I would like you to continue working on you Zoetrope design. This the drawing needs to be completed by Monday, so if you don’t finish by the end of the lesson, take your sheet home with you and bring it back completed, along with a straw, first lesson back next week.

Have a great weekend.

007 – Grammar Lesson # 2

The last time I was away on school sport, I asked you to complete the grammar exercises on pages 6, 7 & 8 of the Clear Writing book; today I want you to do the task on pages 9 & 10.

Please, do you best to complete all the tasks, as we are working towards doing our first Grammar Test in a couple of weeks; everything we have covered in this book will appear on this test.

Have a great weekend.

004 – Homework assistance & wide reading

I am away of school sports today. I would like you to do the following while I am not here.

  1. Ask your classmates and/or the teacher for assistance with homework that you have brought in for today’s class. If you don not have any homework, I would like you to spend the first period working on the short story you are doing in English.
  2. For the second half of the double, I would like you to do wide reading. If you haven’t read A Bridge to Wiseman’s Cove, I would like you to read that. If you have read it, I would like you to chose something else to read. This  can include a newspaper or magazine.
