011 – Clear Writing

Today, you are to complete the next two exercises after the first progress check in the Clear Writing book.

010 – Continue Research project

Today you need to continue your research project.

Make sure that you spend at least one period on this.

You can swap to another type of blog post in the second period, if you want to.

I will be checking Kidblog to see how much work you have completed; please work hard.

018 – Preparation for next weeks SAC

I am sorry for my absence today and tomorrow; unfortunately, it is unavoidable. Luckily we have this blog, so I can still provide you with the information you need in the lead up to the SAC on Tuesday.

Click on the link to download the document I promised you (Quotes relating to conflict – The Rugmaker). Sadly, only a handful of students submitted quotes so the document is not as comprehensive as it should have been. Thank you to those students that did the right thing; it is because of you that the rest of the class have something to work with. FYI – all the quotes are far too long. No quote should be more than five or six words. Try and embed them; you can learn what this means by clicking on this link.

You need to have one or two quotes from The Rugmaker of Mazar-e-Sherif that you can use on Tuesday. FYI – you need to provide evidence from the text, something from you own life and another conflict/consequence of conflict that you have  researched (e.g. KONY2012).

My advice to you is: use two or the three pieces of evidence to support your contention, and use the another to rebut the opposing argument that you present.

Whether you write a speech or a letter, you must include a convincing rebuttal. This means you must present a reasonably strong argument that would be used to disprove your contention, and use good evidence to convince the reader/listener that it is not true.

You must be very clear, before you walk in on Tuesday, exactly what persuasive techniques you intend to use. You should aim to include at least three different persuasive techniques. Things like: repetition, statistics, attack, appeal to fear, reason and logic, rhetorical questions, generalisations, hyperbole and expert opinion are all popular techniques you can use; there are many more, choose three or four and make sure you use them well.

The following link is to a document that you will find useful in my absence:

Persuasive Writing – Text Types

This provides a good over view of the different forms of persuasive writing and their key features. Pay particular attention to the sections on Letter to the Editor and Persuasive Speech.

Your task for today is to list all the consequences of the three conflicts that you are going to write about in your SAC on Tuesday. Remember to list: emotional, physical, financial, local, global, external, and intellectual consequences of your chosen conflicts, as well as any others you can think of.

Your homework is to take everything that you have done in preparation for this SAC and condense it into a one page revision sheet. It should contain notes on: the key features of your chosen form; quotes and their meaning, and the persuasive techniques you intend to use – I will be checking this on Monday and giving out detentions to those that have not completed it.

Have a great weekend.
