020 – Issues Oral

Oral proforma This is the proforma that you are required to print and have filled in for the day of your oral next term.

Please make sure that you bring the purple Language of Persuasion book with you on Monday.

The issue that you chose has to have been covered in the Australian media, anytime between and September 2011.

Remember, the difference between a topic and issue is that a topic is subject, like Education, and an issue is a question that relates to that topic, like Should students have to wear school uniform.

Your homework this weekend is to think about what issue you would like to do.

015 – Writing your formal letter

Last lesson we looked at the layout of a formal letter and how to use a Lotus Diagram as a planning tool. You were then asked to complete a Lotus Diagram from one of the following topics:

  1. Capital punishment – Should we bring back hanging?
  2. Body image – should the fashion industry have more plus size models?

Remember that you should have at least two different reasons why you agree or disagree with the question and at least two persuasive techniques that you will use to persuade me.

Hmk – Re-write your formal letter, arguing the opposite point-of-view. You can type it, if you wish; it should be no longer than a page.

Tasks:

  1. Sit in a circle with one person in the middle. The person in the middle has to choose a noun (person, place or thing) and then say a describing word, beginning with the word ‘the.’ For example, if you choose the word ‘cat,’ you could say something like, ‘the brown cat,’ the next person in line will say the same sentence adding another describing word. The aim of the game is to keep list going for as long as possible. If you forget the list, you are out. The winner is the last person left.
