021 – Looking at a persuasive speech

Today we are going to look at an example of a persuasive speech given by a woman named Katherine Schulz and it’s all about being wrong; we are going to analysis how it is structured and delivered. Click here to view.

We are going to answer a few key questions:

  1. What is different about her introduction?
  2. What do you think of the way she asks questions?
  3. What is the main persuasive technique the speaker uses?

016 – Hand in homework & Persuasive Poster

Learning Objectives:

  1. Improve understanding of how to apply persuasive language to different issues.
  2. Understand the requirements of the next persuasive writing task.
Tasks:
  1. Working in pairs, think of a Topic and think of an issue.
  2. Decide on your contention. Brainstorm 7 or 8 reasons why you think you contention is correct.
  3. Try and write each of your reasons using a different persuasive technique.
  4. Organise your persuasive sentences on an A3 sheet and created a persuasive poster on your issue.
EXAMPLE
Topic: Education
Issue: Should corporal punishment be reintroduced?
INCLUSIVE LANGUAGE
No one ever died from a smack on the wrist, and no one ever died from being taught right from wrong, but someone might die if we don’t get these kids back on the right track.
USE OF STATISTICS/HARD EVIDENCE
The number of expulsions from school is 70% less is the 1950s; the cane was used then, and it was clearly effective.
PERSONAL EXPERIENCE
My parents smacked me as a child and I don’t think it was a bad thing; in fact, I think it help me become the respectful, disciplined person I am today.
APPEAL TO AUTHORITY
The head psychologist at The Children’s Hospital believes, physical punishment to be harmless in moderation, because it mimicks the way children learn through painful experiences.
APPEAL TO PATRIOTISM
Australians have always been strong people, capable of making tough decision; this is a tough decisions but one that real Aussies will be able to make.
RHETORICAL QUESTIONS
You don’t believe that kids will do what you say just because you ask them, do you?
INCLUSIVE LANGUAGE
We have to be strong enough as adults to give the tough love that some of our students need.
