010 – English Basics & DPS

Please complete chapter 18 (p.131-137) of your English Basics book.

Once you have done that, please view the final scene of Dead Poets and answer the following:

  1. At what point is non-diegetic sound introduced? What do we hear, and what is it supposed to represent?
  2. Todd Anderson is the first student to stand on his desk, and Cameron is one of the few students who remains seated. What does Peter Weir tell us about the impact of Mr Keating’s teaching, based on the characters who stand up and those that choose not to?
  3. Mr Nolan’s style of teaching is very different to that of Mr Keating. How does Mr Nolan’s demeanor contribute to the tension at the start of the scene? Think about how different his behaviour is compared to Mr Keating’s at the start of the film.

Complete these questions as extended responses. You need to complete this task by hand.

008 — Revision Sheet

Your short answer exam on The Hunger Games will occur on Monday. Please make sure you use this lesson to collate all notes and Docs you have created on the film on to a two page revision sheet.

You must review your revision sheet in preparation for the exam.

See you tomorrow.

009 — Sentence Diagramming

Last lesson I introduced the concept of sentence diagramming, and we had a look at how to diagramming adjectives. Today I would like you to try adverbs.

Adverbs are words that modify verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs.

Any word that answers one of the adverb questions is an adverb.

The Adverb Questions:

  • How?
  • When?
  • Where?
  • Why?

Example: Rover howled rather loudly.

Directions: Diagram the following sentences in your books. Place any adverbs on slanted lines under the words that they modify.

Tip: The adverb questions themselves are adverbs.

  • Walter ran very quickly.
  • Where is Melissa?
  • May Rover stay here?
  • Thomas Edison worked diligently.
  • Henry bowed politely.
  • The little red bird flew gracefully.
  • The rather large book was sitting here.
  • Where did that black cat go?
  • My very favorite aunt sings beautifully.
  • Who is eating so noisily? (Tip: This sentence looks the same when you change it into a statement!)

If you finish before the end of the period, you may continue with private study.
