008 – Immigration

In today’s class we are going to spend sometime thinking about the idea of immigration. For the upcoming SAC, in two weeks times, you are required to write persuasively about this topic. You will learn about the difference between a topic and an issue. You will deepen your understanding of persuasive techniques. You will learn about writing persuasive essays and speeches. But before we do any of that I’d like you to have a chat about immigration.

In groups of four have a 15 min discussion about whether Australia should control its boarders.

In Child witness detention centre horrors it is clear that how immigrants are treated can have a massive effect on their state of mind. There is the suggestion that it is more than just a question of whether Australia should open its boarders; it is also about how those that seek asylum are treated when they get here.

Riz’s powerful story – GetUp! Australia ad is trying to make the viewer believe that tougher immigration laws are not going to deter people that are seeking asylum from trying to get into Australia. The focus here is on genuine asylum seekers and the terrible hardship they are trying to escape. Riz seems to be suggesting that even if the conditions are made even more unappealing, those that are desperate to escape their homeland will do so regardless and all that tougher measures will do is make their lives a even more difficult.

Your homework is to find two more videos that explore immigration; try and find clips that explore different points-of-view, and bring in the links for these videos tomorrow along with a brief two sentence summary of the main arguments presented.
